It can be helpful for every business owner to know how to find your audience online.

Consumer behaviour has altered dramatically in response to the global pandemic. People across all age groups have been spending more time online. The internet has enabled people to work, shop, socialise and communicate throughout periods of lockdown in 2020 and 2021. According to Ofcom there was a sharp increase in time spent online in 2020. It reported in its ‘Online Nation’ report that adults spent an average of a quarter of their waking day online. You can read a short report on its findings here. It will be interesting to discover whether this behavioural shift has become permanent once 2021 data becomes available.

It is clear that, if you want to share your message with adults in the UK, you would do well to find your audience online. as that’s where they’re active. I noticed that Spring flowers grow to different heights. Tall flowers benefit from attracting pollinators before short ones. You want to be the tallest flower in your field so that you can attract your customers before your competitors do. This means that you must aim to share your message with them in the right place online.

5 tips on how to find your audience online:

1. Know the complexity of your ideal customer

Have a clear idea of who you are seeking. Ideally, your description will include many factors I’ve described in to how to describe your audience blog. There’s a lot more input than is popularly believed.

2. Understand their trigger point for why they might purchase your product or service:

Is there a specific life-event that makes your business relevant for them?

3. Identify places where they might gather together

such as special interest clubs or groups.

4. Research which platform is most relevant to them:

You should Focus your effort on 2-3 platforms that you can commit to with your time and content. Do not worry about the latest growing platform – if your audience isn’t on Tik-Tok or Clubhouse you don’t need to be there either.

5. Monitor media usage by your target audience:

Preferences are fluid and they change in response to trends. If your target group shows signs of migrating towards a new platform then you will need to go there too.

If you follow these pointers you should succeed in  your task to find your audience online. Once you find them you can listen carefully to their needs, engage with them until they develop into leads.
